A soul searching trip from the south of Portugal to the Austrian Alps: this is the story of my great escape.

I am João Saraiva, 38, living in Portugal and passionate about the mountains. I decided to let go of the daily routine and search for the essence of life above freezing level. Destination: the snowy peaks of the Alps of Tirol, Austria. This is my discovery of the The Perfect Winter.

Leaving Faro (southern Portugal) in early January, this solo road trip will head towards Gerlosberg, a small village at 1300m high, nested in the Ziller Valley deep in Tirol. This will be the base for my discovery of the highest peaks and the best slopes of the Austrian Alps throughout the winter. Uma viagem de ‘soul searching’ desde o Sul de Portugal até aos Alpes Austríacos: esta é a história da minha grande evasão.

Partindo de Faro no início de Janeiro, esta ‘road trip’ solitária vai acabar na pequena aldeia de Gerlosberg a 1300m de altitude, encaixada no vale do rio Ziller em pleno Tirol. Esta vai ser a base para a descoberta dos picos mais altos e das melhores encostas dos Alpes Austríacos durante todo o Inverno.
